Search Smarter, Not Harder

Google processes an enormous number of searches every day, yet most people type queries the same way they'd ask a friend a casual question. Learning a handful of search operators and techniques can dramatically improve the accuracy and speed of your results — whether you're doing research, troubleshooting a tech problem, or hunting for a specific product.

Essential Search Operators

1. Use Quotes for Exact Phrases

Wrap a phrase in quotation marks to search for those exact words in that exact order.
Example: "best practices for remote work" — returns only pages containing that precise phrase.

2. Exclude Words with a Minus Sign

Put a minus sign before any word you want to exclude from results.
Example: jaguar speed -car — returns results about the animal, not the car brand.

3. Search Within a Specific Site

Use site: to limit results to one domain.
Example: site:reddit.com best mechanical keyboards — searches Reddit only.

4. Find Related Websites

Use related: to discover websites similar to one you already know.
Example: related:bbc.com

5. Search by File Type

Use filetype: to find specific document formats.
Example: annual report filetype:pdf — finds PDF versions of annual reports.

6. Use the Wildcard Asterisk

The asterisk acts as a wildcard placeholder for unknown words.
Example: "the best * movies of the 90s" — fills in the blank with various genres.

7. Search Within a Number Range

Use two dots between numbers to search within a range.
Example: laptop $400..$700 or World Cup 1990..2010

8. Use OR to Broaden Results

Capitalize OR between terms to find pages matching either one.
Example: marathon training plan beginner OR intermediate

9. Find Cached Versions of Pages

If a site is down or a page was deleted, type cache: before the URL to see Google's saved version.
Example: cache:example.com/article

10. Use Intitle to Search Page Titles

intitle: limits results to pages with your keyword in their title — great for finding authoritative guides.
Example: intitle:guide to sourdough bread

11. Time-Filter Your Results

Click Tools under the search bar, then Any Time to filter by past hour, day, week, month, or year. Essential for finding current information on fast-moving topics.

12. Use Google Like a Calculator and Converter

Google's search bar doubles as a unit converter, calculator, and currency converter. Try: 150 USD in EUR, 5 miles in km, or sqrt(144) — no need to open a separate app.
